Care for the Sansevieria Parva (also known as Kenya Hyacinth) is famously low-maintenance, making it a perfect fit for a "Plantrovert" collection. Unlike common upright snake plants, the Parva features narrower, arching leaves that form a grassy rosette.
Light
-
Bright, Indirect Light: This is its preferred setting to keep the green cross-banding vibrant and promote growth.
-
Adaptability: It is highly tolerant of low light levels, though it will grow much slower.
-
Direct Sun: It can handle some direct morning sun, but intense afternoon rays may scorch or yellow the edges of its delicate leaves.
Watering
-
Drought Tolerant: Only water when the soil is 100% dry. This species stores water in its leaves and is highly susceptible to root rot if kept moist.
-
Typical Schedule: Depending on your environment, this usually means every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer, and as little as once every 1–2 months in winter.
-
Technique: Water deeply until it runs out of the drainage holes, then discard any excess water in the saucer.
Soil & Fertilizer
-
Well-Draining Mix: Use a gritty succulent or cactus mix. Adding perlite or pumice is highly recommended to ensure oxygen reaches the roots.
-
Light Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring/summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Avoid feeding in winter.
Temperature & Humidity
-
Warmth: It thrives in temperatures between 60°F–85°F.
-
Cold Sensitivity: Protect it from temperatures below 50°F, as cold drafts can cause permanent tissue damage.
-
Humidity: Average home humidity is fine. Unlike many tropicals, it does not require misting.
Unique Features
-
Blooms: If given enough light, it can produce small, pale pink or white flowers with a sweet, hyacinth-like fragrance.
-
Growth Habit: Over time, it produces long, surface-level rhizomes that send out "pups," eventually creating a dense, trailing look that works well in hanging baskets.
